On August 5, 2010, a catastrophic rock collapse at the San José Mine in northern Chile trapped 33 miners 2,300 feet underground. For the next 17 days, they were isolated, cut off from the outside world, and unaware if they were alive or dead. Meanwhile, the world anxiously awaited updates on their fate. The mine collapse was a devastating blow to the miners, who were working in one of the world’s most dangerous professions. Communication between the trapped miners and their families was nonexistent, and all efforts to dig a rescue tunnel seemed to have failed.

Against all odds, rescuers discovered the miners were alive when a note with the message “Estamos bien en el refugio los 33” (We are fine in the shelter, the 33) was found. This sparked hope for the miners’ survival. Over the next 52 days, a global rescue operation was launched to bring them to safety. The miners faced extreme conditions, including heat, humidity, and limited food, but their determination and camaraderie kept them alive. As efforts intensified to drill a rescue shaft, the world’s attention remained on the miners.

On October 13, 2010, after 69 days underground, the rescue operation successfully brought all 33 miners to the surface. Each miner was hoisted up one by one, in a carefully orchestrated operation, capturing the world’s attention. The rescue was deemed a “miracle” due to the successful outcome, as many had expected the miners to perish underground. The event received international acclaim for the ingenuity and cooperation between engineers, scientists, and the Chilean government.

The event brought global awareness to the dangerous working conditions in mines and has been cited as one of the greatest rescue efforts in history, with numerous documentaries, films, and books recounting the heroic survival story.
